In general, on public works projects in California, workers must be paid the prevailing wage for their craft. The prevailing wage is just what it says – the wage paid to the majority of the workers of a particular craft in that area, or the “prevailing wage” for the area. The California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) determines the prevailing wage by taking surveys of contractors doing work in the area to determine the wage that most contractors pay for any one specific trade.
