Workers in California are generally required to receive the prevailing wage for their craft when working on public works projects. The prevailing wage is simply the amount paid to the majority of workers in a given craft in that area. In order to determine the prevailing wage, the California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) polls local contractors to find out what the majority of them are paying for a given trade.
